Maria Murayama

I graduated from Musashino Art University Sculpture lab.
and completed master’s degree program in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts 2012.
I joined the most biggest art fair(The name of the art fair is “ART FAIR TOKYO”) in Japan this March.
I went  to the residency in Netherlands (The name of residency is “European Ceramic Work center ”)this April 20 to June10.

I will talk of my work.
These are my very recent works called “Taxidermy” series,
I find taxidermy interesting particularly when located in everyday environments where they seem to be less macabre. In my “Taxidermy” series I am trying to express a sense of altered cognition through changing the environment or context. My animals all look somehow alive but are made to look as if they are bleeding. I also decorate them with wallpaper and carpet patterns.

The support of my sculpture is important for these series.
It’s make them look like they are on the stage. Put them on the stage makes them you can look at them more objectively if they are on the stage like watch the tragic story in the theater.

I prefer to use ceramics rather than the real taxidermy animals precisely because of the way the material changes unexpectedly through the firing process.

Toy series

These are Toy series started from 2016.

I using a toy and Fairy tale as a motif of my work.

When I saw the children playing with dolls, I felt they’re have an own rule .and they create original story in their play.

I felt interesting if they have a same toy, They can create different situation.

In this series, I try to make many different situation by using same elements.

For example,

These works based on Fairy tale .

I using a 3kind of Character. Dragon ,Knight, Princess.

Normal story, Knight fighting against a Dragon for saving a Princess.

In this series. I switch the every role. Every scene one character killing the another character , but the impression to receive from the character changes.

And this series , I tried to use 3Dscan and 3Dprinter.

House hold series

These are house hold series between 2013~2015.
As a ceramic artist, I always interested in house hold such as cups pots plate. I wanted to include these elements in my art work.
At first I used ready-made.
I was curious to know what will happen when I put them tighter and fire them again.
More I worked on these series. I could predict the result and that made me bored of it.
Then I started to make my own product to my ideas.

Body series

These a body series between 2011~2012.
My ideas was to express human five senses.
I think heads hands and feet are the most sensitive parts of our body. To emphasize those parts. I separated them and made individual pieces.

To reason to use flower patterns are they give me a joy of different senses. And patterns of flower are often use for house hold ceramics.
